DATA ANALYST -- Mustang News

Cal Poly's Mustang News is hiring data analysts for a team specifically focused on data-driven and investigative reporting, called The Hill. Over the past two years, Mustang News has hired multiple data analysts with a range of expertise: everything from looking for interesting datasets and analyzing them to scraping websites for data and visualizing it using R or other languages. Bottom line: they all support and even actively lead coverage on some pretty important subjects.

For reference, here are a few really smart and well-done stories our team has published this year:

  1. Armstrong Says ‘21,000+ Students’ Got Tested. Cal Poly’s COVID-19 Dashboard Doesn’t Agree
  2. Cal Poly Isn’t Doing Enough To Address Sexual Assault, Students Say In Survey
  3. Cal Poly Spends More Than $100,000 Isolating COVID-Positive Students

This is a paid position and we are looking to fill at least four spots on our team. Applicants can expect to spend 10 hours a week on work related to this position at most, although it's usually around five hours most weeks. Applications are due at 11:59 pm on Sunday, May 22 and those interested can apply here: https://apply.mustangmediagroup.com/. The app consists of a resume, cover letter and work sample if available.
