Math/Stat Research Opportunity at UNC Charlotte

The Math Research at UNC Charlotte site will be hosting 10-week, full time math/stat research projects for undergraduate students this summer. Applications are due March 15th.  Please see the program overview below. You can find more information and access the application window through the following link: Math/Stat Research at UNC Charlotte

Program Overview

The Math Research at UNC Charlotte (MRC-REU) site will host undergraduate students working with faculty mentors for 10 weeks on research projects in topics including inverse problems, differential equations, number theory, material science, probability theory, and statistics. The objective of the program is to cultivate in the students an appreciation of mathematics and its applications and to stimulate the students’ interest in pursuing careers in STEM. The program will foster the overall professional growth of the participants through presentations, training, and networking with alumni and local industry partners.

  • Program dates: The 2024 MRC-REU program will be from May 20 – July 26, 2024
  • Commitment: This project is expected to be an intensive research experience. During the ten weeks of the program, participants are expected to work full-time on their project. In particular, participants should not hold other jobs or be enrolled in classes during that time.
  • Eligibility: According to the NSF rules (https://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/), undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Additionally, we would like undergraduate students at a university, college, or community college who have a  strong interest in mathematics or  statistics and a desire to pursue undergraduate research. Applicants should be a college-bound high school senior through rising college senior; be and remain a student in good standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher; and plan to complete an undergraduate degree program. Students from colleges or universities that have limited opportunities for research and/or who are from underrepresented groups in mathematics are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Application window: Feb 3 – March 15, 2024. (link)

PALiISaDS Scholarship Opportunity

The Statistics Department is excited to announce that 2024 applications are now open for the Pacific Alliance for Low-income Inclusion in Statistics and Data Science (PALiISaDS) scholarship program!

Established in 2022, PALiISaDS aims to increase STEM degree completion of low-income, high-achieving undergraduates. The alliance is composed of seven public universities located along the west coast of the United States. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PALiISaDS offers a cohort-based bridge program for statistics and/or data science (SDS) majors through their last two years of undergraduate study and first year of graduate school.

Scholars receive need-based scholarships of up to $10,000 per year, academic and career support, and are introduced to a number of relevant topics and SDS professionals through monthly events. The support provided by PALiISaDS helps to bridge undergraduate and graduate programs in statistics and data science and includes an array of community-building activities, faculty and graduate student mentoring, help with grad school applications, and much more.

Eligibility:

  • Junior standing in Fall 2024

  • US citizen, permanent resident, or refugee

  • Pell Grant eligible

  • Statistics and/or Data Science major or minor

  • Full-time student in good academic standing

Scholarships include:

  • Up to three years (two years undergrad, one year grad) of funding up to $10,000/year

  • Faculty and graduate student mentors

  • Monthly virtual community events

  • Opportunities to attend and present at annual S-STEM conferences

  • Grad school and employment application assistance

Applications for the 2024 cohort are now open and will close Monday, April 15, 2024. We will be holding two information sessions–Tuesday, March 5 @ 11AM and Monday, April 1 @ 4PM–and encourage all interested students to attend. To learn more or for help applying, please visit paliisads.org or contact paliisads@pstat.ucsb.edu.

Cal Poly Blood Drives

Hello,

My name is Logan Foster and I’m a junior here at Cal Poly. As part of the CP Red Cross Club, I’ve recently become aware of a national blood shortage that the American Red Cross has declared, as we’ve had the lowest number of people giving blood in over 20 years nationwide. As the vice president of the club, we’ve taken the initiative to try to spread the word and bring awareness to hopefully inspire students to give blood. Fortunately, as you may or not already be aware, Vitalant (a nonprofit blood drive organization) will be at Cal Poly over the next month for dorm students to be able to donate blood right on campus. Additionally, those who sign up to donate will receive a free T-shirt as well as a $10 gift card.

I am writing this email to ask if you could potentially share this news in one of the department's weekly newsletters, or however else you would share larger events such as this. I have included the general flyer with a scannable QR code to sign up, as well as a slide that contains more information such as the actual dates and times Vitalant will be on campus. Additionally, I included the dates and times below should you want to include them in an email or on any announcement page. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

2/7 @ PCV 2:00pm-6:00pm

2/12 @ Trinity Hall 2:30pm-6:00pm

2/15 @ Cerro Vista 1:30pm-5:00pm

2/21 @ Sierra Madre 2:00pm-6:00pm

2/29 @ Yakityutyu 1:30pm-5:30pm

Best,

Logan Foster

Summer Research Opportunity for Undergraduates

Please see the opportunity below:

Data Science Undergraduate Research Pathways (DSURP)   is a new program at Stanford that will take place this summer. It provides an opportunity for students without easy access to research at their home institutions to be paired with a mentor and faculty member to conduct research in data science over 8 weeks during the summer at Stanford. Participating students will also meet other undergraduate research peers, have the opportunity to attend research seminars, and present their work at the end of summer quarter session.

Students selected to participate in the program will receive a stipend of $6000.

The program is 8 weeks long from June 24–August 16, and applications are due by 11:59pm PST on March 3, 2024. We especially encourage students from non-R1 institutions to apply, and such students will receive priority selection.

Check out our web page and submit an application!

For any questions, please contact Daniel LeJeune, dlejeune@stanford.edu.
