2023 Modern Math Workshop at SACNAS NDiSTEM | Applications for funding due July 28, 2023

Please see email below from Director of Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation:

Dear Department of Statistics,

I am writing to ask you to encourage your students to apply for the upcoming Modern Math Workshop.

The Modern Math Workshop (MMW) is a two-day workshop which will take place in conjunction with the 2023 NDiSTEM Conference of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). It will showcase contemporary research happening at NSF-funded mathematical sciences institutes around the country. It grew out of a similarly named yearly event originally organized by MSRI and first held at Howard University in 2002. It became a collaboration with SACNAS in 2006 and has been jointly organized by the Mathematical Sciences Institutes since 2008. Since 2011 this event has been funded by the NSF through the Mathematical Sciences Institute Diversity Initiative. This year, IMSI is the lead organizer for the MMW. The workshop is a mix of activities including research expositions aimed at graduate students and researchers, mini-courses aimed at undergraduates, a keynote lecture by a distinguished scientist, and a reception where participants can learn more information about the Mathematical Sciences Institutes. This page will be updated as specifics about workshop activities become available.

The Modern Math Workshop encourages undergraduates from underrepresented groups to pursue careers in the mathematical sciences, and builds research and networking opportunities among undergraduates, graduate students and recent PhDs. Funding is available to cover travel and lodging and SACNAS NDiSTEM registration for participants in the MMW, as well as to fund lodging for MMW participants who also wish to attend the NDiSTEM conference. Interested students can apply at: https://www.imsi.institute/activities/modern-mathematics-workshop/. Please note that they will need to register on IMSI's website before proceeding to the application.

Questions may be directed to info@imsi.institute

Best regards,

Kevin Corlette

UX for Social Impact - Students can apply now! Applications for priority deadline due June 29

This is to inform you of a research fellowship opportunity for the 2023-2024 academic year (ideally starting over the summer). Dr. Robinson is listed as a Co-PI on an internal grant at Cal Poly with faculty in technical communications (English), computer science, and graphic communication. In summary, the work aims to research and establish a framework for user experience (UX) collaborations between Cal Poly and local non-profit organizations. Each of the different faculty departments involved contributes to the UX field in a variety of ways. The team of faculty are looking for student fellows to work as part of the grant over this next year; in particular, the statistics fellow will work with Dr. Robinson and the other Co-PIs to design, implement, and analyze a survey geared towards understanding non-profit and higher education familiarity with UX. Part of this work will be reading prior literature to define UX and designing the questionnaire.

The fellowship is for $1,500 over the course of the academic year (likely to receive half at the beginning and half upon completion of the project). You can read more about the project, fellow descriptions, and application instructions docx icon here. See the original posting by the PI, Dr. Krista Sarraf, below.

TO APPLY:

  • Priority applications are due by Thursday, June 29th at 8am with initial selections announced Friday, July 14th. Note if the position is still open after the initial application period, rolling applications will be accepted until September 18th (or until the position is filled).
  • Submit your application materials using at https://forms.office.com/r/cPEsys6P19

Please reach out to Dr. Robinson (erobin17@calpoly.edu) with any questions; she is happy to meet with any of you who are interested in learning more before applying.

Dear all,

I am delighted to share that the application for students to participate as paid fellows in the 2023-2024 User Experience (UX) for Social Impact Project is now open.

The User Experience for Social Impact project has three goals:

  1. Enable Cal Poly students to apply User Experience as a diversity, equity, and inclusion focused design tool.
  2. Strengthen local nonprofits’ abilities to serve constituents from diverse backgrounds.
  3. Generate knowledge about university and nonprofit user experience partnership barriers and opportunities.

Here is the general timeline:

  • Phase I: Student Priority Round Applications due Thursday, June 29, 2023 by 8 AM PT.
  • Phase II: Initial Student Fellowship Awardees announced by Friday, July 14, 2023.
  • Phase III: Additional applications reviewed on a rolling basis until Monday, September 18, 2023, or until all fellowship positions are filled (whichever comes first).

You can read more about the UX for Social Impact project and application process here. I am happy to meet with students who are interested in learning more prior to applying.

Best,

Dr. Sarraf

AMS Mass Media Fellowship

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) sponsors a Mass Media Fellow each summer through the Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship program organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This program is designed to improve public understanding of science and technology by placing advanced science, mathematics and engineering students in newsrooms nationwide.

Applicants must be a) enrolled as students (upper level undergraduate or graduate); b) be a postdoctoral trainee; or c) apply within one year of the completion of a) or b). Applicants must be in the life, physical, health, engineering, computer or social sciences or mathematics and related fields with outstanding written and oral communication skills and a strong interest in learning about the media. In its 45-year history, the program has supported over 700 fellows.
Fellows receive a stipend of US$8,000 for the summer, plus travel expenses to and from AAAS and media outlets, to work for ten weeks during the summer months as reporters, researchers, and production assistants in media organizations. They observe and participate in the process by which events and ideas become news, improve their ability to communicate about complex technical subjects in a manner understandable to the public, and increase their understanding of editorial decision making and of how information is effectively disseminated.
