Summer Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics Accelerator Opportunity

If you are not graduating this year and are also considering graduate school in the future, you might be interested in this summer opportunity at the University of Chicago. It's a fully-funded summer opportunity intended to help prepare undergraduate students for graduate school in the mathematical sciences. The program will take place at the Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI), which is located at the University of Chicago.

 
IMSI is a mathematical sciences research institute funded by the National Science Foundation. Their mission is to apply rigorous mathematics and statistics to urgent, complex scientific and societal problems, and to spur transformational change in the mathematical sciences and the mathematical sciences community.
 
The Summer Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics Accelerator (SUMSA) is an eight-week mathematics and statistics bootcamp for undergraduates which will take place June 12-August 4, 2023. The program’s aim is to help prepare students for the rigors of graduate school through lecture series and problem sessions taught by experienced postdocs and advanced graduate students from the University of Chicago.  It will cover core material in linear algebra, advanced calculus, metric spaces, probability, statistical modeling, and data science.  This program is open to students who will be rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors at U.S. colleges and universities and will be at least 18 years old at the time the program begins.

Americorps Fellow Positions Open for Feb-July for Students Graduating this December

 


Cal Poly now has 4-6 openings for 6-month Fellowships from Feb 2023 to July 2023. (This often opens the door for the potential to continue for a full year term.)

 

Fellows in these positions build volunteer capacity at nonprofits and government entities, and receive $2000 monthly living stipend. Current partner sites include SLCUSD, Bike SLO County, and Ecologistics, and may also include Cal Poly Food Pantry and Cal Poly College Corps Team (these last two are tentative).

2023 CSU Research Competition is Now Open!

 The 2023 CSU Research Competition is now open! 

 

The CSU Student Research Competition is held each spring to promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate scholarly research and creative activity by recognizing outstanding student accomplishments across the 23 CSU campuses.

 

The competition is open to all disciplines and to current undergraduate and graduate students and 2022 alums. Cash prizes are awarded.

 

Submissions are due F 1/20/23 at 11:59pm CA time.

    Student Data Analyst (Cal Poly Computer Engineering Department)

    The Computer Engineering Department is forming an enthusiastic, energetic team to help support the CPE office and the department’s data analysis needs! We are looking for student assistants who are motivated, able to collaborate with others, and work independently. Tasks include: General Office Support | Campus errands, tracking/filing forms; Issuing permission numbers; typing notes; Answering phones; Welcoming visitors as well as complex projects using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Forms, Calendar, etc.) or AdobeSign (e.g., PowerForms). Background in customer service is a plus but not required. Data Analysis | Student will be working with the department to compile and create data reports. Strong emphasis on analytics and data handling. Position is responsible for maintaining data, analysis programs, and updating analytics on a regular basis. Background in data science and R programming a plus. Student hired in this role must complete FERPA training and follow Cal Poly’s Confidentiality requirements. Department Events | Help with planning, set up, and take down.

    2023 ASA Student Paper Competition

    Sponsored by the ASA Consortium of Sections (GSS/SRMS/SSS)

    The Social Statistics Section (SSS), Government Statistics Section (GSS), and Survey Research Methods Section (SRMS) of ASA are pleased to announce a competition for student and post-graduate papers. Competition winners will present their papers at a topic-contributed session during the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), August 5 through August 10, 2023, at the Metro Toronto Convention Center in Toronto ON, Canada. Competition winners will also be highlighted during the 2023 SRMS, GSS, and SSS business meetings at JSM. A subsidy of up to $1,000 is provided to each winner to cover JSM 2023 expenses, and five awards will be granted. We ask faculty members as well as supervisors and mentors of recently-hired graduates to encourage students and mentees to apply for these awards.

    Applications are due at 11:59 p.m. EST, December 15, 2022, and winners will receive notification by January 15, 2023.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible to participate, you must be a current undergraduate or graduate student at any level, or a recent 2023 graduate who wishes to present research that was conducted as a student. Previous student paper competition winners will not be eligible for this award.

    Papers entered in this competition must involve either a new statistical methodology or a creative application of statistical analyses to a problem, issue, or policy question pertinent to the subject areas of one of the sponsoring sections. The research does not have to be complete, but competitors must be able to submit an abstract prospectus that describes the planned research and nature of the intended innovation(s).

    There are more than twelve sections of ASA sponsored Student Paper Competition / Travel Awards to assist students with travel expenses to attend JSM. Students may submit papers to no more than two competitions and may accept only one section's award. Students must inform all sections applied to when s/he wins and accepts an award, thereby removing the student from the award competition for the other section.

    Application Process

    Applications must include:

    1. A cover letter with the applicant's name, current affiliation and status, and contact information (address, telephone, email);
    2. An abstract (300 words maximum);
    3. A draft paper (if available); or otherwise a 3-page research prospectus;
    4. A letter from their adviser that certifies the applicant's status (e.g., current student or new graduate who completed the degree within the past year), and describes plans to complete the research.

    3. Competition winners must confirm their acceptance of the award, and immediately inform other sections that they applied to by January 20, 2023. Failure to confirm the award may lead to removal from the list of winners.
    4. Competition winners submit their winning paper abstract through the regular JSM abstract submission process by February 1, 2023. (Winners will be provided with the ID number of the topic-contributed session at which they will deliver their presentations.)
    5. Competition winners come to the JSM in Toronto, Canada in August 2023 to present their winning papers!

    Getting started with Math/Stat research opportunity at Cuesta College

    Math 290: Introduction to Research at Cuesta College

    Math 290: Introduction to Research is a short 12-week 1-unit course that introduces students to the fundaments of research in Mathematics and related fields, and invites them to work on actual open problems with opportunities for publication and dissemination of their names and findings. In addition to being credited in your record, it is transferrable to UC and CSU as elective credit, and it would be a great ally for curriculum building and networking. The course is conducted under the umbrella of IUSE, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (1821351).

    In the 2021-22 edition of Math 290: Intro to Research, a great variety of students enrolled (from high school dual enrollment to already graduate ones), and they did the following fun and remarkable things:

    1. Working in an industrial problem provided by the Department of Public Works in San Luis Obispo. Students studied the problem from different angles (economic, environmental, mathematical…) and presented a report to the Department. 
    2. Working in an academic problem provided by the Mathematical Association of America. Students came with two different solutions to the first part of the problem. 
    3. Three students presented their work in both problems at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, on April 2022. 
    4. Two students presented their work in the industrial problem at MathFest, on August 2022, in Philadelphia, PA (all the expenses paid). This was under the umbrella of PIC Program by the MAA, sponsored as well by the NSF (DMS-1722275).
    5. One student submitted a full solution to the academic problem to The College Mathematics Journal, and his name was published as a solver in May 2022.

    Cal Poly Volleyball Statistics Opportunity

    Do you have an interest in doing data analysis and app development in sports at Cal Poly? The Cal Poly Women's Volleyball team is looking for help with their analytics. This opportunity is a great way to get involved on campus and be surrounded by a great group of players and coaches. All it takes is to fill out one form to potentially get involved. Knowledge of volleyball is preferred but not needed. If you’re interested, current Volleyball Technical Coordinator and Statistics major Nick Ashbaugh is willing to teach you everything you need to know and more.

    Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)

     

    The MCM is held every year over 4 days in January or February; this year, it will take place February 16-20, 2023.   It is open to any undergraduate student enrolled at Cal Poly (full or part time) and is appropriate for students at any level: first-year students to those about to graduate. It is open to any major as well - it can be a competitive advantage in the MCM to have an interdisciplinary team. 

    Cal Poly has a 2-unit support course, Math 371, to coach the teams competing in the MCM. This year, Math 371 will be offered in the Fall quarter (FQ22), TR 6-7pm, 38-135. You do not need to enroll in Math 371 to compete in the MCM, but it's strongly recommended that you do -- especially if you have not competed in the MCM before. 

    If you are interested in the competition, please attend the first meeting for Math 371 doubles as an orientation meeting for the contest. This meeting will be Tue., Sep. 20, 6:10-7:00pm in room 38-135. If you cannot attend this meeting, there will be another orientation meeting held online via Zoom at this meeting id (83996470213).     DATA ANALYST -- Mustang News

    Cal Poly's Mustang News is hiring data analysts for a team specifically focused on data-driven and investigative reporting, called The Hill. Over the past two years, Mustang News has hired multiple data analysts with a range of expertise: everything from looking for interesting datasets and analyzing them to scraping websites for data and visualizing it using R or other languages.     Intership Position - Behavioral Health Department, County of San Luis Obispo

    Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Cultural Competence Data Analysis & Reporting Intern

    This is an intern, hourly paid position under the Behavioral Health Quality Support Team
    Division. The DEI - CC Data Analysis and Reporting Intern is responsible for the following:

    • Collect behavioral health data for the Cultural Competence Plan and support its development;
    • Coordinate analysis and report DEI Cultural Competence training data for the Behavioral Health Department and its contracted partners on a yearly basis and maintain a log;
    • Coordinate and provide support to the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee’s goals and objectives;
