Southern California Edison is looking for two Energy Policy & Pricing Analysts as part of SCE’s Recent Graduate program.  These positions will be in the analytics group within the Regulatory Policy organization.

Become an Energy Policy & Pricing Analyst at Southern California Edison (SCE) and shape our clean energy future. In this role, you’ll provide analytical support that informs SCE’s efforts to advance energy policy and develop customer programs that support California’s decarbonization and clean energy goals.  Specifically, you’ll explore and develop analysis on how SCE designs electricity rates in ways that:

  • Consider the diverse characteristics of our customers;
  • Equitably recover the cost of providing service to our customers;
  • Ensure our customers have access to affordable electricity to meet their basic needs; and

  • Problem Solving & Decision Support: Support cross-functional teams across the company to resolve complex issues that typically require verbal, written, and visual communication with proposed recommendations presented to leadership in a simple, logical, and succinct manner.

Looking for a few good statisticians!

Looking for some paid extra work? Have a keen eye for stats and data science? Want to you use your powers to help improve STEM education? I'm looking for 1-2 dedicated students for paid positions to help with data analysis for some NSF funded research projects! Responsibilities include processing and sanitizing survey data, running multivariable regression models, and identifying statistically significant differences between data sets taken at different times. The underlying projects are designed to help tease out the effects of mental wellness on retention in engineering and computer undergrads, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on student mental health; so passion for mental wellness is a plus. Desired qualifications include: experience with R and popular R packages (including ggplot2), logistic regressions, good written and verbal communication skills, able to show proof of work eligibility to Cal Poly Corporation. In this fun, low stress course you will work with a team of other students led by your instructor in actual open mathematical or statistical problems. These problems might come from a variety of sources, including prestigious journals by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Although collaboration and problem solving are the emphasis of the class, you will also get a chance to learn LaTeX, the standard typesetting program for research journals worldwide. If the team is successful, you will have a chance to publish your results or see your name published in a prestigious international journal such as The College Mathematics Journal by the MAA.

Campus Job Opportunity

Dr. Andrew Fricker (Social Sciences Department) and Dr. Jeremy James (Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences) have funding for two student positions to assist on analysis of spatial data and mapping of drought impacts on California grasslands and oak woodlands. The project team will utilize spatial data from the Basin Characterization Model and net primary productivity data in Google Earth Engine to analyze spatial variation in drought impacts on California plant communities. The first position requires programming experience with either Python or Java Script and ability to work with Google Earth Engine. Experience with statistical approaches to handling and analyzing spatial data is a plus.   The second position requires advanced GIS experience and ability to access, manage, and filter multiple types and sources of spatial data.
 
The positions will start June 2021 and will continue through the academic year.  Applicants should be able to commit to this time period and completing a finished product. Applicants also should show a working knowledge or strong interest in learning about climate effects on California ecosystems. These are paid hourly position with hourly rate based on experience and qualifications.

Data Analyst Intern - Applied Orthopedic Design, Arroyo Grande

OVERVIEW:

AOD, Inc. offers and provides NANO 3D pre-operative analysis and modeling services to assist orthopedic surgeons through kinematic restoration of the articular surfaces of each patient, restoring each patient’s anatomy to their pre-diseased state. Our current focus with this process is the improvement of outpatient joint replacement (knee and hip)

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collection of data, between 2019 to now, to determine trends and patterns within the large datasets
  • Perform data analysis and draw reasonable conclusions from observations and interpretations
  • Generation of weekly updates and documentation of findings to project management
  • Improve current data collection system and implement efficient processes
  • Knowledge of R, Python and statistical coding programs for data analysis and reporting  

REQUIREMENTS:

Slo’Cal Tutors is a Cal Poly club that recruits Cal Poly students that helps and tutors K-12 students in the San Luis Obispo area. We currently have a few tutors helping students at a few schools in the SLO school district, and we would like to attract more tutors by reaching out to the everyone in the Statistics Department. Since our mission is to promote STEM-based learning, we believe this would be an amazing opportunity for Cal Poly STEM majors to gain volunteer hours and leadership experience in their "slocal" community. Especially considering that most of what we tutor is math, we think that this would be an amazing Learn-By-Doing experience for any Statistics major.

This program is designed to provide a quick preview into our engineering graduate programs and research opportunities.

Career Opportunity - Operations Research Analyst - Statistician / Data Scientist

Strategic Systems Analysis Group (SSAG) provides multiple organizations within the Department of Defense with timely and objective assessments and recommendations that integrate technical, operational, programmatic, policy and business analysis.

Tasks include:  

  • Conduct analysis of operational and maintenance data to support Navy submarine fleet operations
  • Conduct Monte Carlo based schedule risk assessments
  • Integrate statistical and probability analysis methods and results across models and projects
  • Create data visualizations in support of decision analysis, model verification, and client communication
  • Work with other analysts to process, extract, and analyze data from reports, schedules, and other source material

  Qualifications:

Mathematical Modeling Competition (MCM 2021)

 

There's an international competition in mathematical modeling held every year over 4 days in January or February called the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (or MCM); the 2021 MCM will be held February 4-8, 2021. This contest is open to any undergraduate student enrolled at Cal Poly (full or part time) and is appropriate for undergraduates at any level. Unfortunately, it's not open to students who already have post-baccalaureate standing. It is open to any major as well - it can be a competitive advantage in the MCM to have an interdisciplinary team.
