ASA's 2024 Internships Listing
Monday, December 18, 2023
ANNOUNCEMENT: Florida Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science (SIBDS) 2024
Please see the announcement below:
If you are an undergraduate or early graduate student with a curious mind, sense of justice, and some statistics, math, technology, biology and/or health science coursework, you are eligible for Florida’s Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science Program (SIBDS). SIBDS is a Training Program funded by NIH. It will take place at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Boca Raton campus from May 20th through June 28th, 2024, with faculty from FAU, University of Miami, and Florida International University. Students enrolled will be housed at FAU unless they live close by, and will receive a stipend (not a salary) to cover most expenses.
Participation in SIBDS will provide great hands-on experience in conceptualizing research questions, determining and executing appropriate analyses, and interpreting results from three Projects using real data. In addition to networking with renown faculty, you will also learn and apply skills regarding scientific communication and cultivate opportunities for further internships. Please join us and you’ll see why in 2022 the U.S. News & World Report ranks ‘statistician’ as the 3rd top Business job, offering competitive salaries, limitless opportunities, and a healthy work-life balance. Careers in biostatistics and data science provide you with the tools to help change the world!
FAU demonstrates and supports a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion, and encourages a teaching approach using equitable and inclusive pedagogy.
We have rolling admission and the last date of APPLICATION completion is March 15th, 2024. Please use the link below to APPLY:
Questions and other correspondence can be emailed Drs. Freeman (kfreemancostin@health.fau.edu) or Chang (changl@fau.edu)
(Please put “SIBDS APP” in the Subject Line).

Let's Play a Game: Gnome on the Roam
Hello all,
We want to play a game with you all. Ever heard of Elf on
the Shelf? We have one better for you! How about Gnome on the Roam! Please meet
our Stats Gnome (see pic below)- they will be traveling throughout the Stats
department admin area (think admin office, student areas, conference room, and
main hallway leading to those areas). Please come look for them, snap a pic of
you and the gnome and send us your pic as proof that you found them (who knows,
we may just do a picture wall of fame!). We will continue to move the gnome to
new locations as they get discovered!
Annnnnnnnnd go…..

Summer Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics Accelerator (SUMSA) | Applications Due Feb 17, 2024
Please see the opportunity below from the Institute of Mathematical & Statistical Innovation (IMSI):
Dear Department of Statistics,
I am writing to let you know about a fully-funded summer opportunity intended to help prepare undergraduate students for graduate school in the mathematical sciences. The program will take place at the Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI), which is located at the University of Chicago.
IMSI is a mathematical sciences research institute funded by the National Science Foundation. Our mission is to apply rigorous mathematics and statistics to urgent, complex scientific and societal problems, and to spur transformational change in the mathematical sciences and the mathematical sciences community.
The Summer Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics Accelerator (SUMSA) is an eight week mathematics and statistics bootcamp for undergraduates which will take place June 10 - August 2, 2024. The program’s aim is to help prepare students for the rigors of graduate school through lecture series and problem sessions. It will cover core material in linear algebra, advanced calculus, metric spaces, probability, statistical modeling, and data science. This program is open to students who will be rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors at U.S. colleges and universities and will be at least 18 years old at the time the program begins.
Participants should have had a full year of calculus (or equivalent experience), gained some familiarity with computational linear algebra (including representation of linear transformations by matrices, matrix algebra, and determinants), and had some experience with mathematical proofs by the time the program begins. Students who have already taken theoretically rigorous courses in both linear algebra and analysis are most likely not a good fit for this program.
I’d appreciate it if you could pass this information along to any students whom you feel might be interested. Further information and the application are available on the program’s web page. Applications are due by February 16, 2024.
Questions can be emailed to sumsa@imsi.institute; please note that this email is sent from an unmonitored box.
Thank you for your time,
Kevin Corlette
Director, Institute for Mathematical & Statistical Innovation

PCCTC Data Science Internship
Please see the attached internship opportunity from Dr. Shannon Pileggi with the Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Consortium (PCCTC). Shannon is a former faculty member of our department and is especially interested in Cal Poly students.
We are hiring another Data Science intern this summer, please circulate among your students. The student must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program and be enrolled in school for the term after they complete their internship (so not open to graduating seniors). Happy to answer any questions!
Thanks,
Shannon
