• On Tuesday January 24^th at 12:10pm, join the Office of Student Research for a hybrid workshop where you can learn more about off-campus research opportunities in Summer 2023 and how to apply now. Off-campus research experiences can connect you to new mentors, opportunities & post-graduation pathways. Most off-campus research opportunities provide a stipend of at least $4500, free housing for student researchers and travel funding. Some opportunities shared at this event will be undocufriendly and the workshop will also include selected opportunities in the social sciences and humanities. This information is to advise about a fully-funded summer opportunity intended to help prepare undergraduate students for graduate school in the mathematical sciences. The program will take place at the Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI), which is located at the University of Chicago.

 

IMSI is a mathematical sciences research institute funded by the National Science Foundation. Our mission is to apply rigorous mathematics and statistics to urgent, complex scientific and societal problems, and to spur transformational change in the mathematical sciences and the mathematical sciences community.

 

The Summer Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics Accelerator (SUMSA) is an eight week mathematics and statistics bootcamp for undergraduates which will take place June 12-August 4, 2023. The program’s aim is to help prepare students for the rigors of graduate school through lecture series and problem sessions taught by experienced postdocs and advanced graduate students from the University of Chicago.  It will cover core material in linear algebra, advanced calculus, metric spaces, probability, statistical modeling, and data science.  This program is open to students who will be rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors at U.S. colleges and universities and will be at least 18 years old at the time the program begins.

Florida Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science (SIBDS) 2023

 Have you ever wondered how data are used to make your life better?  Any thought as to why COVID-19 affects certain populations more than others? What are clinical trials, why are they important, and how do we interpret evidence?  

If you are an undergraduate or early graduate student with a curious mind, sense of justice, and some statistics, math, technology, biology and/or health science coursework, you are eligible for Florida’s Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science Program (SIBDS). SIBDS is a Training Program funded by NIH. It will take place at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Boca Raton campus from May 22^nd  through June 30^th, 2023, with faculty from FAU, University of Miami, and Florida International University. Students enrolled will be housed at FAU unless they live close by, and will receive a stipend (not a salary) to cover most expenses.   

Participation in SIBDS will provide great hands-on experience in conceptualizing research questions, determining and executing appropriate analyses, and interpreting results from three Projects using real data. Wells Fargo CIB - Women on Wall Street Application - Due: Monday, Jan 23

With 2023 in motion, recruiting begins with opportunities for 2024 Summer Internships in Wells Fargo Corporate & Investment Bank (“CIB”). To kick things off, Wells Fargo CIB is accepting applications for our first diversity recruiting event, Women on Wall Street.  

 

The Women on Wall Street event is designed to provide high-performing female sophomores with the chance to explore careers in investment banking, sales & trading, corporate banking and commercial real estate. You will have the chance to hear from various CIB professionals on their experience in the industry, learn more about the different groups within CIB, and receive advanced technical training hosted by Training the Street. Select candidates may also be considered for interviews for paid summer internships in summer 2024.

 

Event: 2023 Women on Wall Street

Event Dates: February 23-24, 2023 (subject to change)

Venue: Charlotte, NC (travel accommodations and meal expenses to be paid by Wells Fargo)

Qualifications: Women interested in CIB with an expected gradation date of December 2023 or May/June 2025

Opportunity: Potential to gain insight on a career within CIB and interview for a 2024 summer internship within a CIB business

Cal Poly Campus Beautification Initiative: Utility Art Box Project

Cal Poly Campus Beautification Initiative: 

Utility Art Box Project

Cal Poly is spearheading an effort to beautify the campus through the transformation of utility boxes and similar utility infrastructure into canvases for works of public art to enhance the vibrancy of campus, showcase local talent, and deter graffiti. The Utility Box Art Project will provide an opportunity to introduce themes to campus, create a sense of place and identity, and inspire thought. It will also be a chance to showcase artistic talent and encourage the Cal Poly community to engage with their surroundings. The Utility Box Art Project is a fun and unique opportunity for Cal Poly students, faculty, staff and community members to add their creative touches to the campus landscape.

Applications are now being accepted.  Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to submit an application via email to:  af@calpoly.edu by February 15, 2023. Selected artists will be notified in March 2023 and will receive a $250 Amazon gift card to cover material costs.  The Utility Box Art Project guidelines and application can be found here.
