What is the Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science program?


The Summer Institute in Biostatistics (SIBS) and Data Science is sponsored jointly by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).


The comprehensive six to seven week summer training course on biostatistics and principles of data science combines classroom learning with career mentoring and hands-on data analysis using data collected from clinical studies in prevention and treatment of infectious, immune-mediated, and chronic diseases.


Designed to address a growing imbalance between the demand and supply for biostatisticians and data scientists, the course targets undergraduates and beginning graduate students who are interested in learning about biostatistics, and encourages them to consider graduate programs related to biostatistics and data science.


The typical curricula include an intensive introduction to biostatistical approaches and research by exposing participants to the principles, methodologies, uses, and applications of statistical methods in biomedical and clinical research.

What is special about the Big Data Summer Immersion at Yale?


After ten outstandingly successful years at the University of Michigan, the SIBS program is launching at the Yale School of Public Health. Yale University, with its rich landscape of teaching, research and practice in data science and health, provides a perfect setting to launch this program in the summer of 2025. The students will stay in the beautiful residential colleges at Yale University campus.


Undergraduate trainees joining this six-week immersion program will go through preparatory bootcamp in R, Python and Statistical learning in the first two weeks. Each morning, they will attend didactic lectures by stellar faculty in biostatistics, epidemiology, statistics, computer science, biomedical data science and each afternoon they will work in small groups on mentored research projects, supported by a graduate student and a faculty mentor. The projects will be in the areas of infectious disease modeling, causal inference, and genomics. Public health, medicine, social science and policy researchers will share their perspectives on using data science for improving human health.


Throughout the program, the students will attend professional development workshops and have an opportunity to bond over social events. At the end of six weeks, they will present their research in a concluding symposium through posters and oral presentation. In our morning lectures, we will focus on responsible and ethical use of data science and artificial intelligence in this iteration of the program.

Data Science Bootcamp in DC – Summer 2025

Call for Applications: Data Science Bootcamp in DC – Summer 2025

The Department of Statistics at The George Washington University (GWU) is hosting a four-week Data Science Bootcamp from May 19 to June 13, 2025. Applications are now open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Duration: 4 weeks (May 19 - June 13, 2025), including a project showcase on September 6, 2025.
Format: In-person at the GWU campus, with structured workshops, group projects, and guest lectures.
Application Deadline: January 20, 2025. 
Target Enrollment: The program aims to accept 20 students for the bootcamp.
Scholarships: The program offers a $2,000 stipend to each accepted student who completes the full four-week program, funded by an award from the Public Interest Technology (PIT) University Network program of New America. Room and board are not provided.
This immersive program aims to equip undergraduate students with essential data science skills to address pressing health equity and climate resilience issues. The curriculum focuses on building statistical thinking, navigating computing environments, completing hands-on projects with open health and climate data, advancing professional development, and engaging with expert guest lectures.
The program is led by GW faculty, Drs. Tatiyana Apanasovich (lead PI), Huixia Judy Wang (PI), and Fang Jin, in collaboration with Trinity Washington University (Dr. Kerry Luse and Dr. Kaitlin Wellens) and the University of the District of Columbia (Dr. Dong Hyun Jeong).

Please help spread the word about the New England Statistical Society's NextGen scholarships for underrepresented minorities in statistics and data science! 

Eligibility: 

  • Graduating high school senior or first/second-year undergraduate student 

  • Persons from the following racial/ethnic backgrounds: American Indian/Alaskan Native, Black/African American, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander  

  • Will be enrolled in a U.S. college or university for the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year 

  • Shows a genuine interest in statistics and data science through coursework, extracurricular activities, and/or future goals 

Deadline: May 1, 2025 

Amount: at least $1,000
