Are you an undergraduate student with a passion for mathematics, statistics, data science, or related sciences? Do you have coding experience and a desire to apply your skills to real-world health challenges? The University of Michigan's Big Data Summer Institute (BDSI) offers a transformative six-week program designed to immerse you in the dynamic intersection of data science and public health.

Interdisciplinary Learning: Engage in daily lectures and programming workshops led by experts in statistics, computing, and health sciences. Topics include statistical analysis, machine learning, epidemiology, and data visualization.


Hands-On Research: Collaborate in faculty-mentored research groups, tackling projects such as cancer data science, genomics and machine learning in healthcare. Develop practical skills in data manipulation, statistical computing, and data visualization.

Eligibility Criteria

Academic Standing: All undergraduate students are encouraged to apply, with a priority for rising juniors and seniors.


Relevant Background: We recommend prior coursework in mathematics and/or statistics with some coding experience.


Passion for Health: A strong interest in applying quantitative skills to improve human health is essential.


Program Benefits

Comprehensive Support: Receive a $2,000 stipend, up to $500 in travel reimbursements, $200 in Blue Bucks for on-campus dining, and single-occupancy, on-campus housing.
