BIG DATA SUMMER INSTITUTE - Univ. of Michigan

This full time 6-week on-campus summer institute will introduce undergraduate students to emerging challenges at the intersection of Big Data, Statistics, and Human Health.

Lectures will be led by a diverse group of stellar biostatistics, statistics, electrical engineering, and computer science faculty at the University of Michigan. Faculty from biomedicine and public health will present their perspective of big data. Working in teams, students will participate in mentored big data research projects.

Southern California Edison is looking for two Energy Policy & Pricing Analysts as part of SCE’s Recent Graduate program.  These positions will be in the analytics group within the Regulatory Policy organization.

Become an Energy Policy & Pricing Analyst at Southern California Edison (SCE) and shape our clean energy future. In this role, you’ll provide analytical support that informs SCE’s efforts to advance energy policy and develop customer programs that support California’s decarbonization and clean energy goals.  Specifically, you’ll explore and develop analysis on how SCE designs electricity rates in ways that:

• Consider the diverse characteristics of our customers;
• Equitably recover the cost of providing service to our customers;
• Ensure our customers have access to affordable electricity to meet their basic needs; and
• Incentivize customers to make efficient decisions about their consumption of electricity and adoption of existing and emerging clean energy technologies (i.e. electric vehicles, distributed energy resources, microgrids, and building electrification).

• Pricing Insights & Perspectives: Develop research and analysis on various dimensions of utility ratemaking and pricing strategy, which will be used to create a series of connected narratives and principles to engage a broad set of internal and external audiences.
• Problem Solving & Decision Support: Support cross-functional teams across the company to resolve complex issues that typically require verbal, written, and visual communication with proposed recommendations presented to leadership in a simple, logical, and succinct manner.

Looking for a few good statisticians!

Looking for some paid extra work? Have a keen eye for stats and data science? Want to you use your powers to help improve STEM education? I'm looking for 1-2 dedicated students for paid positions to help with data analysis for some NSF funded research projects! Responsibilities include processing and sanitizing survey data, running multivariable regression models, and identifying statistically significant differences between data sets taken at different times. The underlying projects are designed to help tease out the effects of mental wellness on retention in engineering and computer undergrads, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on student mental health; so passion for mental wellness is a plus. Desired qualifications include: experience with R and popular R packages (including ggplot2), logistic regressions, good written and verbal communication skills, able to show proof of work eligibility to Cal Poly Corporation. MATH 290: Introduction to Research

In this fun, low stress course you will work with a team of other students led by your instructor in actual open mathematical or statistical problems. These problems might come from a variety of sources, including prestigious journals by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Although collaboration and problem solving are the emphasis of the class, you will also get a chance to learn LaTeX, the standard typesetting program for research journals worldwide. If the team is successful, you will have a chance to publish your results or see your name published in a prestigious international journal such as The College Mathematics Journal by the MAA.
