2025 Summer REU: Equitable Data Science in Adolescent Development

Please see the email below from University of Minnesota:

Dear all, for Summer 2025, the Division of Biostatistics at the University of Minnesota will be hosting a 10-week Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), called Equitable Data Science in Adolescent Development. This 10-week REU is a paid, full-time position designed to give undergraduate students hands-on training and research experience in data science, statistical modeling and machine learning, and scientific communication. Topics on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and their role in data science form the foundations of this program, emphasized early through DEI modules and discussions. Students will analyze data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, the largest longitudinal study on adolescent development in the United States. The titles for Summer 2024's projects are below, to give you an idea of the types of projects the students can work on for Summer 2025:

  • Investigating the Impact of Religiosity and Structural Support on Pubertal Development in LGBTQ+ Adolescents
  • Characterizing the Structure of Early-Life Adversity and Associations with Risk-Susceptibility in Adolescent Behaviors
  • The Impact of Early Life Adversity on Mental Health Outcomes
  • Impacts of Prenatal Tobacco Exposure on the Developing Brain: Socioeconomic, Environmental, and Genetic Influences
  • An Interactive Dashboard for Distributional Modeling of Adolescent Brain Development

Our website contains more details about the program. If you know any undergraduate students who may be interested, please share this website with them, and please encourage them to apply. The deadline for applications is 31 January 2025.

If you have any questions about this program, please let me know.

Thanks!

Silicon Crystal Balls: The Science, Math and Methods of Factory Future Prediction, Scheduling and Control

Hi Statistics and Data Science Students,
Dr. Holland Smith from INFICON will be visiting Cal Poly Oct. 9.
If you have any interest in operations research, optimization, machine learning, stochastic models, or just want to hear a really good speaker, you are invited to his talk (see flyer)
Details: 6:10-7:30 (probably 192-237).
But I especially want to invite you to a “meet and greet” with Dr. Smith from 4 – 5:30 pm in 180-331 before hand. There will be pizza!
Feel free to come ask questions about working in the semiconductor industry or about how he sees the role of machine learning in forecasting etc.
This will be informal discussion, not a presentation. Please email me at bchance@calpoly.edu if you are interested in attending any portion of the meet and greet so we can get a rough headcount. (And you may notice the room of the talk may change, so maybe let me know if you think you can attend that as well to help with planning 😊).

 Thanks!
