Orientation meeting: 2026 MCM (Math. Contest in Modeling)

Please see the message below from  Cal Poly math professor Dr. Camp about participating in MCM!

Hi everyone,

I'm the coach for the Cal Poly teams in an international competition in mathematical modeling -- the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (or MCM). I'm holding a pair of orientation meetings for the 2026 MCM. If you're interested, please attend one or email me if can't make either. Details about the contest and Math 371 are included below.
  • on-campus: Mon., Sep. 22, 6:10-7:00pm, 38-135
  • by zoom: Tue., Sep. 23, 6:10-7:00pm, zoom link

2026 MCM  (WQ26) and Math 371 (FQ25)
The MCM is held every year over 4 days in January or February; this year, it will take place Jan. 29 — Feb. 2, 2026.   It is open to any undergraduate student currently enrolled at Cal Poly (full or part time) and is appropriate for students at any level: first-year students to those about to graduate. It is open to any major as well -- it can be a competitive advantage in the MCM to have an interdisciplinary team. You can get further information about the contest on the contest's website: COMAP-MCM

We offer a 2-unit support course, Math 371, to coach the teams competing in the MCM. This year, Math 371 will be offered in the Fall quarter (FQ25), MW 6-7pm, 38-135. You do not need to enroll in Math 371 to compete in the MCM, but it's strongly recommended that you do -- especially if you have not competed in the MCM before.

If you are interested in the competition, please attend the first meeting for Math 371 which doubles as an orientation meeting for the contest. This meeting will be Mon., Sep. 25, 6:10-7:00pm in room 38-135. If you cannot attend this meeting, there will be another orientation meeting held online via Zoom, Tue., Sep. 26, 6:10-7:00pm, at this meeting ID (81217633497). (A complete zoom invitation is included below.) Please email me If you are interested in the contest or the course but cannot attend either orientation meeting.

The University of Michigan’s Department of Biostatistics is offering three in-person opportunities this fall-- plus another virtual-only session

Biostatistics and health data science are fields that bring statistical methods, mathematics, and computing together to solve critical problems in public health and medicine. From modeling disease outbreaks to developing fair clinical AI tools, these disciplines equip students with rigorous quantitative skills applied directly to real-world health challenges.

This fall, the University of Michigan’s Department of Biostatistics is offering three in-person opportunities -- plus another virtual-only session -- designed for students exploring graduate study in these areas.

These events are ideal for students in mathematics, statistics, computer science, biology, public health, or many other related fields who want to see how their training can translate into impactful careers.

Biostatistics Prospective Student Day

Saturday, Sept. 20 | 9:00am - 1:00pm | School of Public Health

This is the main prospective student event for those who can attend in-person. Hear from current students and faculty about how backgrounds in fields like biology, neuroscience, public health, psychology, or others have shaped their graduate experience. Discover how methods like causal inference and longitudinal modeling complement a scientific mindset—and how a degree in biostatistics can lead to new types of impact. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

Biostatistics Hackathon 2.0

Saturday, Sept. 27 | 10:00am - 4:00pm | School of Public Health

Join a team to explore real-world public health data. With mentorship from Michigan Biostatistics faculty, you’ll tackle an investigative challenge—drawing evidence-based insights from messy, meaningful data. It’s a low-stakes way to apply your curiosity, critical thinking, and research skills in a new light. Meals are provided.
